Spirulina is an extremely versatile food and people in Africa are already harvesting spirulina from natural sources. In fact, residents living around Lake Chad in Africa have reported that they have survived times of famine living completely off of spirulina grown in the lake. You cannot survive purely on spirulina but it can help when there is a shortage of food.

It is possible that these farms can be setup in regions of famine to help with food shortages. Spirulina would in fact help many residents in poor countries because of its high nutrient levels it will help prevent malnutrition and prevent disease and infection.
